LATEST LSDN UPDATE – TUESDAY 01/03/2022
Following the announcement of the government’s ‘Living with Covid-19 Plan’, we are writing to update staff, students and members of the public on what the changes mean for those working or studying at LSDN.
From this week onwards, we will be phasing out our Covid-19 testing arrangements in line with the government’s policy of discontinuing the delivery of free tests to schools and educational institutions. Nationally, tests remain free until 1 April, these can be collected from various health and local authority premises/services.
We will remain responsive and sensitive to staff and students who may be vulnerable due to personal circumstances or underlying conditions, this includes continuing to allow face coverings onsite for those who wish to wear these and continuing to provide desk shields and protectors where requested.
Where staff and students are unwell, they should continue to stay at home. We want to keep our community safe and will continue to be cautious to avoid the risk of infection and illness spreading.

LATEST LSDN UPDATE – FRIDAY 10/12/2021
Welcome to the latest update from London Skills & Development Network. This update has urgent news on new Covid-19 restrictions and LSDN Centre holiday closure dates.
COVID-19 UPDATES
Guidance issued for Londoners by the Mayor of London
Cases of Omicron are rising sharply and early evidence indicates this variant of COVID-19 may be more transmissible than previous ones. With so much at stake, it is better that we act now to safeguard the public and help reduce pressures on NHS services, rather than being forced to take tougher action in the future. The best thing Londoners can do now is to book their COVID-19 vaccine or booster jab as soon as they’re able to. Vaccines have been a game-changer and a life-saver in our fight against COVID-19 and are still our best defence against the virus.Londoners should also continue to be vigilant and wear face coverings on public transport, in shops and in crowded and enclosed spaces, wash hands regularly, keep a social distance where possible, ensure busy places are well ventilated and carry out regular testing.Londoners have done the right thing throughout this pandemic – and I know they will continue to do so in order to slow the spread of the virus as much as possible.

At present, LSDN Adult Education Centre is not required to move its provision online and our intention is to keep our centres open and continue with face to face delivery as long as it is safe to do so.

It is especially important that all students check Google Classroom for any messages in advance of travelling to LSDN after the holidays.
Our centre will be closed on Wednesday 15 December for staff training in the morning and for staff Christmas Party in the afternoon. Please do not travel to LSDN premises on this day as we will not be open to the public. Our centre will close for Christmas on Friday 17 December 2021 at 5pm and will re-open on Tuesday 4 January 2022 at 9.30am. LATEST LSDN UPDATE – TUESDAY 30/11/2021
Welcome to the latest update from London Skills & Development Network. This update has urgent news on LSDN’s response to the Covid-19 Omicron variant.
Over the weekend the government has announced additional measures in response to the Omicron variant. The government has also updated its advice for schools and education settings. As part of our efforts to protect our staff and students and keep our premises safe, we are implementing a number of additional Covid precaution measures. These measures will become effective immediately, from Tuesday 30 November.
FACE COVERINGS
In line with government guidance, face coverings are to be worn in all communal areas of LSDN premises and should be worn in classrooms/offices when staff/students are not seated at their desks.
SOCIAL DISTANCING
We are asking all staff and students to maintain appropriate social distancing wherever possible. Please look out for floor markings to assist you in maintaining adequate distance from each other and from staff and student desks and work areas.
VENTILATION
Ventilation is one of the best methods of preventing the spread of germs and infections. LSDN’s policy is to keep windows and doors open wherever possible. We advise our students to take account of the weather and to dress warmly.
DESK SCREENS/WIPES
All staff and students are encouraged to use the wipes provided to wipe down their table/workspaces at the start and end of each day. We also advise all staff and students to use the available desk protection screens.
We will continue to keep our Covid Precaution Strategy under constant review and welcome feedback, comments and proposals from staff and students. We will continue to follow government guidance and this may mean changes are made at short notice in line with public health requirements. Any queries or concerns can be submitted to: info@lsdn.org.uk.
LATEST LSDN UPDATE – FRIDAY 05/11/2021
Welcome to our latest update. It has been a fantastic and very busy start to the new academic year. We have been pleased to see so many new and prospective students interested in our courses and we look forward to an exciting year ahead.
With news of Covid cases steadily rising in the community and as we head into the winter months, we have taken the opportunity to review our Covid prevention strategy and we have made a few adjustments, these will become effective Monday 8 November.
LSDN Covid Prevention Strategy – 2021/22
ENHANCED TESTING
In order to increase the visibility and accessibility of covid tests and to encourage higher levels of covid self-testing, we will have test kits available at each of our reception desks. All students are strongly encouraged to test themselves at least twice a week and must report their results to the NHS (details can be found in the booklet in the testing kit).
RED ZONES/SOCIAL DISTANCING
To keep our staff and students safe, we are encouraging social distancing across all of our centres. As part of this measure, we are creating designated red zones around staff desks to assist students and colleagues to identify the distance they should be keeping from staff desks and working areas. The zones will be designated with floor markingsand posters/signage as applicable.
DESK SCREENS
Staff are encouraged to use protection screens for all close contact work. Students can also request desk screens from reception.
We will continue to keep our Covid Precaution Strategy under constant review and we welcome feedback, comments and proposals from staff and students. Our internal strategy may be superseded by government guidance at any time. Any queries or concerns can be submitted to: info@lsdn.org.uk.

Covid-19 Updates
As the country starts getting back to the new normal, we’re continuing to do everything we can to keep our premises as safe as possible:
- Ventilation – one of the most effective tools in ensuring a Covid-safe environment is good ventilation. We have installed air filtration units across all of our premises and will keep windows and doors open wherever possible.
- Social distancing – although social distancing requirements have been relaxed, we will continue to encourage social distancing on our premises, wherever possible. We will also maintain appropriate seating spacing in our classrooms and will continue to offer desk screens for those who wish to use these.
- Cleaning – we will maintain enhanced cleaning arrangements for the foreseeable future including deep cleaning of premises on weekends.
- Personal hygiene – we will maintain access to antibacterial gel and handwashing premises across all areas of our premises as well as antibacterial table wipes and encouraging staff and students to observe safe practices in relation to coughing and sneezing.
- Testing – we continue to encourage all LSDN staff and students to do the Covid Lateral Flow Tests on a regular basis. Our recommendation is for all staff and students to test themselves twice a week while attending LSDN premises.
LSDN staff, students, and visitors are also encouraged to continue using face coverings where appropriate and where individuals prefer to do so as a matter of personal choice.
Bridging the Gap
Bridging the Gap is LSDN’s new flexible programme for students who need help with their English, maths, digital, or employment skills. LSDN has a confidential and discrete foodbank to help meet the needs of our students and their families. If you need help, please email us in confidence: safeguarding@lsdn.org.uk.
Wishing everyone an enjoyable weekend.

Last week, LSDN reopened its doors to LSDN staff and students. We want to thank everyone, staff and students alike, for making it such a successful and exciting week. We are very happy to be back and hope that all students enjoyed their time at LSDN last week.
In our latest update, we focus on mental health and wellbeing, along with reminders regarding Covid-19 related health and hygiene requirements.
Mental health and wellbeing
The effects of the pandemic are affecting us all and will continue to do so for some time. The additional health, economic and financial pressures of the pandemic along with the disruption to daily life, routines and social interactions has resulted in high levels of stress, anxiety and mental health challenges across the nation.
Over the coming months and years, we will all need to do everything we can to look after our own mental health and wellbeing, while also doing our best to support the mental health and wellbeing of those close to us. Below are a series of tips, resources and recommendations we have put together and which we hope everyone will find useful.
Mental Resilience Training (MRT)
A series of short videos and supporting resources developed by the British Army to help army personnel understand and develop mental resilience techniques has been made available to civilians for the period of Covid-19. These can be accessed at the link below:

BBC Documentary
Some of you may have watched the BBC documentary Roman Kemp: Our Silent Emergency, first broadcast on Tuesday this week at 9pm. For those of you who have not had a chance to watch this engaging documentary, please see below for a short summary of the documentary which is currently available on BBC iPlayer.
Roman Kemp: Our Silent Emergency is a deeply personal and candid film following Roman as he explores the mental health and suicide crisis affecting young men in the UK.
In August 2020, Roman’s life changed dramatically with the sudden and unexpected death of his best friend, radio producer Joe Lyons. This timely documentary sees Roman taking a closer look at the urgent issue of young men’s mental health, exploring why increasing numbers are taking their own lives and the reasons why so many of them never ask for help.
Wanting to find some answers in a difficult time, Roman explores what can be done to encourage people to seek help, what preventative action we need to be taking, and the lasting impact mental health and suicide can have on friends and families. This is a film about Roman’s generation, young men and boys as they become adults, and how he himself could help add to a dialogue that might help those who are struggling in silence.

LSDN Matrix Assessment Visit
Matrix is the government quality standard for information, advice and guidance services in the education sector. We are pleased to report that LSDN passed its latest assessment on 4/5 Feb with flying colours.
We’re immensely grateful to all of our students who attended meetings with the assessor and contributed to our assessment by sharing their views, opinions and experiences of their time at LSDN. All feedback is useful, it helps us to improve areas of weakness, continue our good work in areas of strength and ensure that we maintain our focus on continuous improvement and meeting the needs of our students.
A few highlights from our Matrix Assessment Report:
– Managers and delivery staff consistently brought to life their strapline of ‘We CARE about the Community, We BELIEVE in EDUCATION, We are here for PEOPLE not PROFIT’.
– Over the last 12 months the digital learning officer, support staff and curriculum tutors have
developed a virtual learning environment that combines Google Classroom and Nimble
eLearning functionalities. Feedback from students highlighted that the induction videos and resources on employability and professional behaviour were “really helpful and easy to navigate”. Achieving a digital platform of this nature is testament to the commitment of the staff in keeping learning and IAG content relevant and accessible throughout the pandemic.
– Learners were full of praise for “inspirational” and “uplifting” support and IAG that “left me feeling like a million dollars”.
– The latest learner survey highlighted how the LSDN experience has improved clients’ career prospects; understanding of keeping safe; understanding of citizen rights and responsibilities; and health and wellbeing.
– As a small social enterprise, LSDN is making a real impact on the community. At its core is a
workforce focused upon quality IAG and this is implemented with care and rigour.
– In summary, this accreditation review confirmed that LSDN continues to deliver a quality IAG offer that is making a real difference on an individual, family and community level. The organisation is forward-thinking, agile and developing compelling futures for adults and in turn the social capital of individuals.

At 8pm last night the Prime Minister announced stricter national restrictions. We are in effect facing another lockdown similar to the one announced last March with schools, colleges and education settings required to close.
Unfortunately, LSDN will have to close its doors to the public for now. However, we remain fully operational and will continue all of our planned courses online. Students should check Google Classroom for updates on their courses and revised delivery arrangements or contact their teachers/tutors directly. Students can also contact us on info@lsdn.org.uk in the event of any queries, difficulties or concerns.
New and prospective students are able to contact us with any course enquiries and can apply for new courses at LSDN as we will continue to enrol students and start new courses throughout this period.

This will be our mission for 2021 and we hope that you continue to be part of this journey with us.
STAY SAFE EVERYONE, AND WE HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL SOON!
LATEST LSDN UPDATE – FRIDAY 18/12/2020
Welcome to LSDN’s final update of 2020 🎆
We encourage all students to check their Google Classroom page before travelling to LSDN after the Christmas/New Year holiday period. As reported in the media, there is a possibility that the Government might advise for classes to take place online the first week in January with onsite classes returning in the second week of January only (week beginning 11 January). Nothing has been confirmed yet and other changes remain a strong possibility depending on developments and infection rates over the festive period. We will post any important or urgent messages on our website and on Google Classroom, students should check these sites periodically throughout the festive season for any updates.
Finally, we want to take the opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday period. This has been a momentous year and one we will not easily forget. Despite the challenges and difficulties this year, there have also been occasions of joy, moments of great unity and many lessons learned. The events of this year have given us all an opportunity to review how we live our lives and reconsider what is most important to us as individuals and as a society. LSDN will continue to do its best to ensure that we are a force for good and contribute to a better and fairer society for all.

The current lockdown in England comes to an end on the 2nd of December 2020. On the 2nd of December, lockdown arrangements are being replaced with a regionally-differentiated approach, different tiers of restrictions will apply in different parts of the country according to risk.
There will be 3 tiers for local restrictions:
Tier 1: Medium alert
Tier 2: High alert
Tier 3: Very High alert
On Thursday 26 November the government will announce which areas are in which tier. You will be able to use a postcode checker to find out the restrictions in your area or an area you plan to visit. The new rules will come into effect from Wednesday 2 December.
Across all tiers, everyone:
– must wear a face covering in most indoor public settings, unless they have an exemption
– should follow the rules on meeting others safely
– should attend school or college as normal, unless they are self-isolating. Schools, universities, colleges and early years settings remain open in all tiers
– should walk or cycle where possible, plan ahead and avoid busy times and routes when travelling
LSDN has remained open throughout the second lockdown and our centres will remain open unless government guidance changes. We continue to take every precaution to keep our premises and environment safe. We have implemented the following critical rules and requirements:
– Staff and students are required to wear face coverings at all times in all of the public and common areas of our premises and when visiting or attending a room which is not your usual designated desk/learning area;
– Staff and students are required to socially distance and maintain a minimum distance of 1 metre (2 metres where possible) from each other;
– Staff and students are required to use the desk shields provided at their desk/table to keep themselves and others safe and to use the antibacterial wipes provided to clean surfaces that they use both before and after use;
– Staff and students are required to wash or sanitise their hands regularly;
– Students should wait at reception for a temperature check before entering LSDN premises;
– Staff and students should NOT attend LSDN premises under any circumstances if they are feeling unwell;
– Staff and students should do everything they can to minimise the risk of transmission to themselves and others.
WELLBEING FOCUS
With many of us spending more time at home there has been an increased focus on activities, ideas and tips for wellbeing at home. One of the areas recently featured in the media has been the benefits of indoor plants on health and wellbeing. One of the recent articles is shared here for information:

This week, the Prime Minister outlined a change in Covid-19 rules and restrictions due a rise in infection numbers and community transmission. Please read and follow these carefully:
– Those who can, have been advised to work from home.
– From Thursday 24 September pubs, restaurants and other hospitality venues will close at 10pm. Restaurants will be allowed to carry on doing deliveries after 10pm.
– Pubs, restaurants, and other hospitality venues will now only offer table service. You must wear a face covering at all times, except when you’re sitting down to eat or drink. Staff will also wear face coverings during their shift.
– Face coverings will be also compulsory for retail staff, in taxis and public hire vehicles. This is in addition to the places you must already wear them, including public transport, shops, galleries, and places of worship.
– The maximum number of people who can attend wedding ceremonies and receptions will now be 15. Funerals can still allow a maximum of 30 people.
– The rule of six will also now apply to all adult indoor team sports.
– There will also be a pause on the re-starting of public events, conferences, and audiences at sporting events.
– Police will be able to issue higher fines to those who refuse to comply with the rules. The fine for failing to wear a face covering if you do not have an exemption, or for breaking the rule of six will be £200. If you break the rules on self-isolation you could be fined up to £10,000. Fines will also apply to business breaking COVID-19 rules.
As an educational establishment, there are no new restrictions that apply to LSDN and we remain fully open and operational at this time. Nevertheless we are taking every precaution we can and want to take the opportunity to remind students to wear their masks in all of the public and common areas of our premises. MISINFORMATION AND FAKE NEWS ALERT – NEW SHARE CHECKLIST
Be careful what you share. Things aren’t always what they seem online.
Just because a story appears online, doesn’t mean it is true. The internet is great, but it can also be used to spread misleading news and content. Protect yourself and your friends from false information about coronavirus. Use the SHARE checklist to make sure you don’t feed the beast. You can find out more here: https://sharechecklist.gov.uk/

RACIAL EQUALITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
The Prime Minister has made a statement on racial equality and social justice. Education Organisations have been asked to share this message with their staff and students.
Prime Minister message on Black Lives Matter
The death of George Floyd took place thousands of miles away – in another country, under another jurisdiction – and yet we simply cannot ignore the depth of emotion that has been triggered by that spectacle, of a black man losing his life at the hands of the police.
In this country and around the world his dying words – I can’t breathe – have awakened an anger and a widespread and incontrovertible, undeniable feeling of injustice, a feeling that people from black and minority ethnic groups do face discrimination: in education, in employment, in the application of the criminal law.
And we who lead and who govern simply can’t ignore those feelings because in too many cases, I am afraid, they will be founded on a cold reality.
Yes, I am proud to lead the most ethnically diverse government in the history of this country, with two of the four great offices of state held by a man and a woman of Indian origin; and yes, I am proud of the work I began to lead more than ten years ago to recruit and promote more young black people, in the police and other walks of life.
This country has made huge strides. I remember the 1970s, and the horror of the National Front. I truly believe that we are a much, much less racist society than we were, in many ways far happier and better.
But we must also frankly acknowledge that there is so much more to do – in eradicating prejudice, and creating opportunity, and the government I lead is committed to that effort.
And so I say yes, you are right, we are all right, to say Black Lives Matter; and to all those who have chosen to protest peacefully and who have insisted on social distancing – I say, yes of course I hear you, and I understand.
But I must also say that we are in a time of national trial, when for months this whole country has come together to fight a deadly plague.
After such sacrifice, we cannot now let it get out of control.
It is BAME communities who have been at the forefront of the struggle against coronavirus – whether in health care or transport or social care or any of the other essential services that have kept our country going.
And it is BAME communities, tragically, that have paid a disproportionate price.

COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS) LATEST LSDN UPDATE – THURSDAY 04/06/2020 (3.30pm)
Statement from Virginie Ramond
Following on from last week’s update introducing our plans for a phased re-opening of our offices and centres, in this week’s bulletin, we provide a short update on our progress thus far and reflect on some of the wider issues affecting society at this time.
LSDN CENTRE RE-OPENING PROGRESS UPDATE
Following last week’s news that we aimed to start cautious preparations towards a phased re-opening of our centres, we have made some excellent progress this week. We have completed a full site audit to identify the changes needed to our premises in line with government guidance and we have identified the resources and equipment required to enable safe working practices. Throughout the week, we have also consulted our staff in regards to their needs, preferences and priorities related to our re-opening plans.
Our primary method of course delivery will continue to be online for some time to come, however, we do hope to start welcoming students on a 1:1 or very small group basis from around the last week in June, this will probably only be for a few hours at a time initially, rather than a full day, due to the restrictions we will face across the premises and to limit risks to all involved. Look out for further updates in our upcoming weekly bulletins.
SOCIAL JUSTICE AND THE SITUATION IN AMERICA
Those of you who have engaged with LSDN will know that as an organisation we are passionate about equality, social justice and the unequivocal respect of human rights for all. We reject all forms of discrimination, racism, injustice and abuse of power. We stand in solidarity with all those who feel marginalised, oppressed and have faced or experienced discrimination of any form.
Equality is a conscious choice, as with justice and anything else of importance, worth or value in our lives, it is something that we must all work hard to achieve and requires constant and conscious investment to maintain. We all have a choice and a role to play in advancing equality and social justice.
As an organisation that is dedicated to the principles of education and sharing knowledge, we encourage everyone to educate themselves on the subjects of racial equality, discrimination and unconscious bias. Let’s make a commitment to use this time as an opportunity for both personal and societal growth and to work together for positive lasting change. As Martin Luther King said ‘injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere’.
Finally, for anyone who may be intending to join any of the demonstrations or group gatherings planned to take place in London or across the UK, please take care to maintain social distancing and to take appropriate steps to protect yourself. Ethnic minority communities have been shown to be at greater risk of Coronavirus and although the infection rate has lowered, it has not gone away, continued caution is essential.
If you are affected by any of the above issues or would like to talk to someone in confidence, please call our confidential safeguarding line on 07823 492658.
COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS) LATEST LSDN UPDATE – THURSDAY 28/05/2020 (3.30pm)
We hope everyone is enjoying the glorious weather this week. Today’s bulletin is focussed on information related to the re-opening of LSDN centres.
LSDN CENTRE RE-OPENING NEWS
From next week, LSDN will start the process of getting its centres ready for re-opening. In the first instance, we will make sure suitable arrangements are put in place to enable LSDN staff to work safely and to settle back into the workplace. Following this phase, we will make arrangements to start welcoming students and members of the public back to our centres, initially, this will be on a very limited scale with strict restrictions in place regarding social distancing and a maximum number of people we can have in the centre at any time.
In all cases, we will continue to follow government and scientific advice and will prioritise the health and safety of our staff, students and members of the public at all times.
Subject to public health advice and further developments, we expect our centres to re-open before the end of June.
We will continue to post updates here. In the meantime, if you require any support or have any queries, feel free to contact us: 0203 784 1294.
Stay safe everyone.

COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS) LATEST LSDN UPDATE – TUESDAY 12/05/2020 (3.30pm)
This week is the eighth week since lockdown began across the UK. On Sunday, the Prime Minister set out some initial plans for ending the current lockdown and easing some of the restrictions. Below we provide a quick summary of LSDN updates and our advice to students and their families.
Following Sunday’s broadcast, there will be no major changes to operations at LSDN, all LSDN staff are already successfully working from home and will continue to do so until we can be assured that it is safe for staff to attend work premises.
At present, our centres remain closed, but we want to assure all of our students and partners that we remain fully operational and we are here to support all of our students to successfully complete and achieve their programmes with us. Please feel free to contact us with any queries or if you require support, our usual telephone numbers and email addresses remain fully operational.
We also wish to take the opportunity to remind everyone to stay safe. Despite some small easing of lockdown restrictions, the present threat from coronavirus has not gone away and anyone with pre-existing health conditions or other vulnerable categories should take special care to avoid any risk of infection. The streets and local shops have become busier as people start to travel again for work or leisure, so please all be mindful of this.
Please also be aware of the increased risk of fraud and IT security issues during this time, as well as the high levels of ‘false’ or ‘fake’ information being circulated, especially via social media. You can see some of our previous updates (below) in regards to these issues. In the event of any concerns or queries, please feel free to contact us.
Finally, a thank you to all students who participated in our live quiz event last week. You will all be pleased to know that The Great LSDN Quiz is back tomorrow, the theme is ‘movies, movies, movies’. The winning prize is £25 M&S or Amazon shopping voucher.

The purpose of these appointments is for students to get help with any technology/equipment issues and to get support with their assignments if this is not possible over the phone. LSDN is also providing a limited foodbank service.
Foodbank provisions
LSDN has limited foodbank provisions available for LSDN students and their families. We only stock dry goods such as cereal and pasta, long-life milk, and tins. We distribute provision from our foodbank every Monday and Wednesday between 10am and 12pm. Appointments must be made in advance for everyone’s safety and wellbeing. Any student requiring support should contact Ramota Sanusi: rsanusi@lsdn.org.uk/07823492658 or Jermaine Johnson: jjermaine@lsdn.org.uk/07885296016.
Stay safe everyone and keep on learning!
COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS) LATEST LSDN UPDATE – FRIDAY 24/04/2020 (3.30pm)
As we come towards the end of the 5th week since lockdown began, we wish to reflect upon and pay tribute to the resilience, flexibility and creativity of LSDN staff and students who have worked so hard to make the very best of these difficult circumstances. We are proud that we have been able to continue teaching and supporting our students, not only in their learning, but also with welfare and family circumstances, offering support, advice and assistance wherever possible. We are exceptionally proud of our many students who have continued to make excellent progress with their learning, attending online classes, and completing assigned learning tasks online and remotely on a daily basis, despite the various difficulties and challenges they may be facing.
In today’s update, we want to raise awareness of the importance of e-safety, as well as the increased risk of fraud and misinformation during this time.
Information: internet safety
Let’s Talk About It, a support site, has put together a useful guide for students, parents and carers about online safety during the Covid-19 period. The guide can be found at the following link: https://www.ltai.info/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Parent-Guardian-Online-Radicalisation-Information-and-Support.pdf
Information: increased fraud risk during coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic
Periods of instability, such as during the coronavirus pandemic, bring an increased risk of fraud. Fraudsters will actively exploit these difficult times and will target vulnerable areas for financial gain.
We have been informed that some students and parents have received a letter from the Department for Education or from ESFA asking for personal student bank details in relation to the 16 to 19 Bursary Fund. The ESFA and Department for Education want all students to be aware that they will never ask for personal bank account details. This is a fraudulent letter – please do not respond.
All students should look out for any fraudulent letters, texts and emails. Avoid clicking on links from any unknown sources. If in doubt, contact us and our IT team can verify the information for you.
Information: misinformation and conspiracy theories
Periods of instability, such as during the coronavirus pandemic, bring an increased risk of misinformation and unfounded theories. Some may seem innocent or even humourous, however, some can pose serious risks to people’s health and wellbeing. To avoid falling into this trap, you can use an unbiased fact-checking website to verify the accuracy and legitimacy of information you come across, this is especially true of information circulated via social media. You can access the UK’s independent fact-checking charity service via this link: https://fullfact.org/
Wishing everyone a happy Friday and a lovely weekend!

COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS) LATEST LSDN UPDATE – TUESDAY 21/04/2020 (3.30pm)
We are now entering the fifth week of lockdown and we have all been doing our best to stay home and stay healthy while continuing to work, study and/or look after our families.
For some, I am sure that the last several weeks have not been easy. Some people live alone and wish they didn’t while others live with family or friends and are wishing for a few moments of peace and quiet. Either way, these are unprecedented times we live in and that also means unprecedented challenges. But it’s not all doom and gloom, we are all adapting in the best ways we can and many people are using the time to do things that perhaps they would not normally have the opportunity to do, trying an online fitness class, writing that book we always promised ourselves we would write, learning to cook or bake, or simply catching up on quality family time.
However you are coping and whatever you may be dealing with, we want to let you know that LSDN is here to HELP. We all need to look out for each other and do our bit in these difficult times.
In the meantime, LSDN courses are still running and you can contact us Monday to Friday 9-5 to join one of our courses or for support to complete your course if you are an existing or past student. We are also supporting our students with access to technology where needed and with employment and volunteering where this is something that they are interested in. Whatever your circumstances, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will work with you to find a positive solution.
For parents whose children are entitled to free school meals, you should be receiving £15 vouchers or supermarket gift cards. The link is: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-free-school-meals-guidance/covid-19-free-school-meals-guidance-for-schools#national-voucher-scheme
Stay safe, stay healthy and we hope to see you soon (even if it’s only on Zoom)!

EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT
Some students have indicated an interest in employment opportunities during this emergency period. This is very much a personal choice and individuals should seriously consider their personal health circumstances (such as any pre-existing health conditions) and also the circumstances of their household, such as whether anyone in their household is vulnerable or at increased risk. For individuals who do wish to work, there are a number of sectors that are actively recruiting new staff and/or still working during this crisis, these present good opportunities for people who do wish to gain employment during the current period of crisis. Some of the sectors currently recruiting or still operating throughout the crisis include:
– Rail sector
– Security and Stewarding sector
– Health and social care sector
– Logistics sector (delivery drivers/couriers)
– Retail sector (mostly supermarkets)
You can find some additional information at the following link: https://metro.co.uk/2020/03/30/supermarkets-hiring-offering-temp-jobs-moment-12479475/
In addition to paid employment, there are also volunteering opportunities with the NHS (https://www.goodsamapp.org/NHS) and other local charities and community groups.
Any students requiring help, support or advice in relation to employment or volunteering should contact Jermaine Johnson: 07885 296016 / jjermaine@lsdn.org.uk
